The Map of the Marathon

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the Marathon of the Daleks! This is a fun marathon/contest to lead up to the Season Seven premiere of Doctor Who. That first episode is called Asylum of the Daleks and according to its writer, Steven Moffat, it will feature every Dalek that has ever been on the show. The ones from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 00s, all of them.

So to prepare ourselves for this epic madness I've created this contest. Below are listed 90 entries featured the beloved villain: The Daleks. Some are short, some are long and some are really long.

After you complete one of those entries go to its thread and write a short (or long) post about what you thought of it. Let us know what you liked, didn't like, etc. Enough to prove you did watch this.

Whomever watches/listens/reads the most entries from the start date (July 23rd) to the premiere of Asylum of the Daleks (probably August 25th) will win the grand prize. The prize isn't 100% confirmed yet, but if I get everything worked out it will be a very worthy prize.

Also for those who don't want to go crazy trying to watch all of these, there will be a few raffle prizes. Every time you write a post your name will go in a hypothetical hat and will be drawn randomly. My posts and the grand prize winner will be excluded. Isn't that interesting!

A few reminders...

--I don't care if you've seen them before, only post a post if you watched it between July 23rd and August 25th.
--If I suspect you of cheating in any way, you're out. Don't look up stuff online and try to pass off a review. That's extremely pathetic. This is supposed to be fun.
--You do not have to watch these in any order.
--For more information about where to find them or what they're about, click the links to the threads. I'll provide information to legal sources where you can find them. For a handful, I can give you the direct link to watch them. There may be other ways beyond legal means to watch these things, but I'm not going to post them.
--The posts don't just have to be your mini-reviews. You're encouraged to engage with everyone in discussion.
--Finally, this is more of a marathon than a contest. If you don't think you can't watch an insane number of these, you should still play along as much as you can because it's fun.


If you want a place to start, I would recommend the Ninth Doctor episode "Dalek", the First Doctor serial "The Daleks" and possibly the best Doctor Who story ever, the Fourth Doctor serial "Genesis of the Daleks". Three very different styles of television with those three.

I've heard some Big Finish audio plays, but I haven't heard any Dalek ones yet. Obviously there are a lot. I think you can probably jump in with a Doctor or companion you like. I've heard if you start with Jubilee, that is a good choice since that is the one that was adapted into an episode in Season One. Also you can find David Tennant in a series...

Also once you have an idea who the Daleks are, I recommend watching the documentary "Dalekmania" just to get an idea how iconic and popular they became in the UK.

So, prizes?

Apologies! I put the results on Facebook and Twitter, but forgot to put it on the actual site.

Michelle Manzo won the grand prize due to having completed 83 of the 90 entries. She received a personalized signed photo of Nicholas Briggs that is currently in the mail on route to her.

For the raffle prizes, I put all of the non-Michelle and non-me entries in a chronological list from when they were posted. There were 137 entries. So I found an online randomizer and the numbers it spewed out where Pedro Aubry's entry for Dalek Empire I Part I (Invasion of the Daleks), Robbie Mehling's entry for The Stolen Earth, and finally after getting a lot for Robbie the final entry was Rachael Clark's entry for The Pandorica Opens.

I sent them an email and they picked their prizes. Pedro wanted a Dalek poster that was in a recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine, Robbie wanted the book featuring the Tenth Doctor called Autonomy, and Rachael wanted the book Prisoner of the Daleks.

Thank you to everyone who played along! It was so much fun to read everyone talk about Doctor Who, especially if they were trying things they hadn't seen before like the Classic Series and the audio dramas.

I'm thinking about doing another one of these in November to lead up to the Christmas special and maybe another one between the Christmas special and the rest of the season. There won't be any prizes because I can only lose so much money on free contests. But I was thinking about having one for the Cybermen and another one (since they are strongly rumored to be in the next season...) for the Ice Warriors. Let me know if you're interested!
