Daleks in Manhattan (Tenth, 2007)

Daleks in Manhattan

The Tenth Doctor and Martha visit New York City in the 1920s only to discover that something shouldn't be there....It's the Daleks. It's right there in the title.

What did you think? Is this the most authentic version of New York City ever? Seriously what was up with that girl's voice? Did you know Spider-Man was from Kentucky? Why didn't people react when Martha messed up that dance number? Lazlo?

This episode is available on Amazon Prime, Netflix Instant and DVD.

I had to brace myself to watch this episode again. Another RTD episode that could've been good, ruined by the stupidest things. Pigmen? Seriously? Those awful accents? It was nice to see Spiderman, although how he got to the 1930's, I'll never know. Is Spiderman a Time Lord?

It was really cool to see the Daleks being cunning and having a really cool plan and working behind the scenes. It's different from the usual straight out "Exterminate Everyone" Method. The Cult of Skaro is a pretty awesome idea and Dalek-sec is cool. Beyond being tough and stuff, its nice to see how brilliant and intelligent they are.

Overall, this episode seems like its being forced to be educational with the whole depression thing, although the Great Depression setting is neato.

Daleks in Manhattan

This episode is just weird, that's really all I can say about it. The pig-men just seem totally ridiculous and unnecessary. It turns into too much of an educational piece on the depression in America.

That said, the idea of a human-Dalek is sort of interesting. The Cult of Skaro is a change of pace from the regular Daleks in that they're trying to just find a way to survive. Definitely interesting seeing them experiment rather than just exterminate.

Also, I love Andrew Garfield. But not when he's pretending to have a Tennessee accent.

I watched this just two or three weeks before the marathon started for a rewatch program on a different site. This probably would have worked better if it didn't have to be padded out into two episodes. The pigmen and the dance number probably would not be missed.

Note that the definitely flying Daleks are foiled by a ladder. Or maybe it's the size of the manhole.

John Steinbeck's other book about the Depression

I don't really care for this episode. It weirds me out that Andrew Garfield is an Englishmen playing an American in a British television show. I do love this time period but I don't understand why it had to be pigmen. Such a random choice. I did enjoy the meeting between Laslo and Talullah after he was transformed. Can't wait to see where the human dalek goes!

I hate this two-parter so much. It was truly embarrassing to watch. The Doctor and Martha are great, but at that point you need to ask them why they're trying. It's not like everyone else is phoning it in. They honestly think they are doing a good job, but nobody else is. Except for Andrew Garfield who is just happy for the work. Crazy bad script that could have been better as a one-parter. I may not be able to watch the next part tonight.
