Eddie Izzard on the Daleks (Stand-Up comedy, 1993)

Eddie Izzard is one of the most beloved stand-up comedians. You may know him as an actor from the FX series "The Riches" or you may know him as "that comedian who likes to wear lady clothes." Either or. In his special "Live at the Ambassadors" he did a few minutes about our beloved show, Doctor Who. Don't worry, he mentions the Daleks.

So the first time I saw this bit, I had never seen an episode of Doctor Who. I am a HUGE Eddie Izzard fan, I even got to see him when he was in Indy and it was awesome, so I watched it and laughed at the points where the audience laughed even though I had never even seen a dalek at this point. Flash forward to a few years later after I had become a Doctor Who fan and I rewatched this special and I actually understood the dalek and Doctor Who jokes. I find it amusing that even almost 20 years after that special was filmed, Doctor Who's companion's main job to be captured is still true, at least it felt that way in the Rose Tyler years.

If you can get a chance to see the whole special, the bit about Star Trek is pretty funny too. And adverts. For being his first special, it's still surprisingly funny.

He's a lot younger here than I'm used to seeing him, mainly because I"m only really familiar with his appearance through Glorious, a very recent special.

I think he harped on the plunger a bit much, but it was worth it for "And this is Kev the Dalek... he doesn't really count".

Makes me laugh how he harps on all the dalek "defects." I liked his bit about the plunger, I guess you're right Peter that he went on a little long, but especially in the early versions the plunger just seems bizarre. We do of course see it in action later.

Also yet another person on about how they can't do stairs! It's fun to poke at, but my first Dalek episodes was "Dalek" with the 9th doctor where they've figured out how to do stairs, what with the whole flying thing. The joke doesn't stick as well now, but I can still see the humor in it

Didn't the Daleks figure it out in the later classic series? I think I heard something about it related to Remembrance of the Daleks...

I recently, but not recently enough for the marathon, watched Daleks in Manhattan, and found it amusing that even though they were previously established as flying, and later in the story are shown flying, are utterly beaten by a ladder in the sewer.

The bit about the companions was the funniest part. I've only seen Doctors 9-11, and his companion is still constantly getting captured to start things off. The Dalek stuff was funny also, but yeah, some of it is only really relevant to pre-2005 Dr. Who.

Funny, I reckon. I like how he keeps going on about the defects. And the "I'm captured bit. Although that doesn't seem as true anymore. Like the others said, he keeps going on and on til the repetitiveness makes it lose its funny. Overall, not bad. I've never seen any of Eddie Izzard's standup before. Might have to check some out.

This is one of the links I put up before having watched it so I can save myself a few things. I found this to be very fun. Like most Doctor Who humor, it comes from a place of love. He clearly watched this as a kid and was affected by it. Sure the stairs bit is old, but I really enjoyed the plunger stuff. Also I found his thoughts on Classic companions to be rather funny. Having seen some of his later material, it's fun to see him stumble a little bit through bits. He's a lot more polished now. Still, I found it to be a lot of fun.

ok, i totally get why you'd get behind the couch when the Daleks come out, watching the Dalek Relaxation Video for Humans really reminded me how these bad guys actually can be scary. as for the plunger, pretty much everyone's first thought when they first see a Dalek.

I though the standup was okay. I didn’t find it that entertaining or funny. I don’t know why. He pointed out all the weird features of Daleks, especially the fact that they clearer have plungers. Also, I do think the bit went on too long. (But maybe that’s just because I wasn’t amused by it.) It seemed like he was starting to repeat himself. Eddie Izzard is a funny guy and I love hearing people talk about Daleks, but for some reason this didn’t work for me.
