Dr. Who and the Daleks (Movie, 1965)

Dr. Who and the Daleks

Every nerd has their irrational geek thing that irritates them. Mine is having people type out "Dr. Who" instead of Doctor Who. Yet it fits with this movie since this is not an official Doctor Who movie. Terry Nation was the man who created the Daleks and he managed to keep the copyright for them. So in the height of their popularity he adapted some of his serials into movies. This is from his first serial "The Daleks." Instead of a Time Lord, he has a human scientist who invents a TARDIS. His name is actually Dr. Who. Whatever.

This used to be on Hulu, but it seems they took it off. Maybe it'll go back on! Until then you will have to search around for a copy if you want to be legal about it.

What did you think of this? Was it weird to see this parallel version of things? Was it better than the actual serial or was this just Terry Nation making more money?

ok so... Wow. this movie is... interesting. who knew an episode of Dr. Who relied so much on the Dr. being The Doctor.... when you watch this you have to constantly remind yourself this is literally a madman with a box (his invention named TARDIS). He is an old human being, i.e. about to die or break a hip or whatever, so he brings along his REAL granddaughter and his niece, along with the man who's supposed to take her on a date. this is Susan, Barbra, and Ian Chersterton, tho it's not really Chesterton, it's some funny clumsy man not the least bit as cool as the real Chesterton. At least they're consistent in their remakes, the guy never sees the rope coming when he's ordered to catch. Also the Daleks don't look as cool, the lights are stupid in red and the teal caps are lame too. This first one was not bad at all considering it was the first ever Dalek episode, but this was amusingly lame, even tho it was virtually identical.

What the Hell...

I knew what I was getting into with this one, but I still wasn't prepared about how shameless Terry Nation was. He literally repeated every single thing from The Daleks. Only thing he added was a way to introduce everyone so we have Ian as a complete idiot stumbling, ready to pick up Barbara for a date. So they casually check out her father's/uncle's (I missed the connection) time machine that he built which is slightly bigger on the inside, but not that much to notice.

Then it's all the same. Even down to Ian accidentally destroying Susan's flower. It's all just blander and they missed really great moments. They increased the budget, but lost all of the craft. They didn't even bother to fix any of the plot problems. Like do you really need the Thal to have a random extra case of anitidotes when you can just have them use the first batch? Once again, plenty of TARDIS to city to TARDIS to city, silliness.

This is bad but it's like watching a bizarro version so it's hard to turn away.

Definitely agree with everybody, a rather uninspired remake of The Daleks, yet not nearly as good or interesting as the original. It was interesting to see it in color from the 60's. I didn't care much for Peter Cushing's performance. Again, it seemed like he was trying to be a copy of the first Doctor and not his own character.

Rather not have to watch this ever again.
